When To Visit Emergency Room

When do I bring my child to the ER right away instead of to my pediatrician’s office?

  1. Babies less than 1 month old with a fever
  2. Fever for more than 5 days
  3. Difficulty breathing
  4. Allergic reactions where there is swelling of any part of the face, or making ‘funny sounds’ while breathing
  5. Poisoning: Swallowed or drank any foreign substance
  6. Choking
  7. Drowning
  8. Active bleeding that won’t stop
  9. Blue or purple skin or lips
  10. Broken bones
  11. Changes in behavior: loss of consciousness, after a head injury, suicidal thought
  12. Electric shocks
  13. Burns or smoke inhalation
  14. Injuries to face or knocked out teeth
  15. Cuts that need sutures
